In Memory

Kathie Owen

Sister Carolyn provided the date of Kathie's demise -- July of 1984. It was, as Scott recalled, due to a car crash.  Full name: Kathryn Lynn Owen.

This also from Carolyn:

My sister, Kathie,  was an accomplished student in high school as well as college.  She attended Occidental College, UCSD and graduated from Chico State with a degree in American Studies.

This is a letter from Carolyn to Kathie:

Dear Kathie,

I remember the nice family vacations in Santa Barbara, Ca  at the Miramar Hotel,

The campsite in El Capitan (Santa Barbara).  We almost got kicked out off the campsite because, Chico,  our chihuahua barked SO LOUD!!

I also remember all the fun we had going out  and listening to great music at the Sawmill in Pasadena and Reflections, Montrose.  We loved listening to Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Loggins Messina , James Taylor, Elton John...

I wish that you could have met Laura, your niece.  She is beautiful like you, but she has blondish hair and blue eyes. A lot of times when she laughs she sounds like you!!

I wish that you could have met Sweet Wilamina.  She would love to play and jump on you and smother you with sweet dog kisses!!

You had so much to give but your life was cut short by a car accident.

We all love you always.

Carolyn Owen & family

Today, I dedicate  this song to you:

“Time in a Bottle”, by Jim Croce:

If I could save time in a bottle

The first thing that I'd like to do

Is to save every day 'til eternity passes away

Just to spend them with you.

I believe I learned that Kathy died in an auto accident many years ago, not long after graduation.  She was in one of my classes in 11th grade and we got to know each other a bit. She was cute, sweet and smart, and had a warm smile.  She had those brown puppy dog eyes that just melted me, and was not much more than 5' tall, if that!

I finally got the nerve to ask her out on a date and when we got back to her front door, I leaned down to kiss her good night, closed my eyes and kissed her right on her nose! I was so embarrassed, that I said something silly, abruptly walked to the car, and left as quickly as possible.  I was horrified that I'd messed up my first real kiss.  She had so much potential and I'm so sorry that her life was cut short.  The sky was the limit for Kathy Owen.
